Case Study

·         What are some films that are similar to yours (genre, budget, audience, etc.)? How are they typically financed? Where does the money come from?

o    Complete a case study following a film of your choice from its inception all the way through to its exhibition:

§  History/target audience

§  Production

§  Distribution

§  Marketing

§  Cross-media convergence and synergy

·         What are some production companies that specialize in films similar to yours? Which of them would be ideal choices for producing your film?

A film similar to the one that I will be creating is “Saw”. This film has a very similar approach for what I am going far. For example, the two men that were taken woke up chained to pipes in a dirty bathroom and they have to complete a serious of tests and sadistic trials by a serial killer named “Jigsaw” in order to live. The production companies involved were Twisted Pictures, Evolution Entertainment, and Saw Productions Inc. The budget was $1.2 million for this film to take place. Some production companies that specialize in mystery/horror films are

-         The Safran Company

-         Troma Entertainement

-         Vertigo Entertainement

-         Twisted Pictures (produced Saw) and etc.

The brand of my film

·         What does the script look like for your film? You should have at least a basic summary of the film in order to pitch it. Research and skim screenplays for other films in your genre to get an idea of what they look like (this is also a great exercise for scripting your opening sequence). Resource: http://www.moviescriptsandscreenplays.com/ (Links to an external site.)

What is your "brand" or "mission statement" for your film? What are you striving towards? What are you trying to achieve with your story? Your brand will be important for choosing a production company and pitching your film.

The script of my film will be based on a mystery horror type of film. It will begin with a woman walking at night by herself and then out of the blue someone kidnaps her and takes her away leaving only her phone behind. When she wakes up, she is in a room on a bed but the room was odd, it had no windows or any type of sunlight. She opened the door but it just led to another door being in front of her. The mission statement for my film is to leave the viewers anxious and scared to see what happens next. I want the film to be intriguing but also something that will make viewers want to run away due to the fact that it is scary and the mystery will keep giving suspense.  The main point of my brand is to sir emotions and make the connection with the audience.

Intended audience

Who is the intended audience for my film? Why? What are their moviegoing habits? How will I get them to see my movie? My intended audience are people that love to watch scary movies or like to think things out when it comes to mystery. I want viewers that are curious on who may be the killer or what is going to happen next throughout the film. My main goal of the film is to also have viewers that are scared of scary things because while watching, it makes it more thrilling. They should be able to watch it and have popcorn next to them but still feel the tension and suspense throughout the film. I will get them to see my movie by simply making it interesting.

What do the titles normally look like for films in my genre (style, size, font, etc.)? What kinds of information do I need to include in the titles? Normally the font is weird and big. The fictional mystery that are mostly for kids are usually in bubble big letters. In the title, it should make sense so that it matches what is expected throughout the film. For example, Scooby doo makes sense but when you watching you see the talking dog that is named Scooby doo.

What does the mystery genre look like?

• What do the opening sequences look like in other films of my genre? How does an opening sequence reveal meaning and tone without giving away too much? How much action really happens in the first 2 minutes of a film? Complete a detailed shot-by-shot analysis using screenshots. The opening sequence of mystery in other films plays some kind of creepy music and characters that are odd looking. With Scooby Doo it shows all the characters that they are going to see and capture, it gives a brief viewing of how things are going to be throughout the film. Most opening sequences start of subtle or immediately with a lot going on. The beginning sequence gives some sort of breakdown of what you will be seeing throughout the film.
The put the names of important actors on things or characters to put emphasis on it. • What are the settings or locations of other films in my genre? Where and when are they often shot? The mystery fictional series, Scooby doo was shot in Australia. Production started on February 12, 2001 at the warner bros.

Understanding my movie

• What kind of movie am I trying to make? (Source https://penandthepad.com/6-key-conventions-common-murdermystery-plots-12004663.html )
- I think my group and I are going to do a mystery thriller •
What are the basic genre conventions of my movie (themes, style, characters, etc.)? - The murder is the central plot in almost, if not all murder mysteries. The murder aids the story play along. The story bases on how much evidence the murderer left at the crime scene so that the detective can begin the search. The detective begins to use that evidence and witnesses to gather what was the motive behind the killing of the person.
 - The murder is most often shown during the end of the book or film, it also plays as an important corrector. They are mentioned multiple times throughout the scene and throughout the script. The murder is also often someone who you least expect, and it should shock viewers.
 - The victim dies in the beginning, but some murders like to play out the whole movie and kill them towards the end so that a sequel could come out and see how it continues to pay out. Also, there may be multiple victims and the on ethers in the beginning is not the only one that’s going to die.
 - Clues! Throughout the film you will see clues and those clues help you track down the murder. At some point there will be some sort of twist or misdirection but eventually the main characters will figure it out and figure the case.

Opening Credits

What is the purpose of the opening credit?

-An opening credits give you information on the main people that are starring the movie. It gives you an idea if you will like it or not so that you can continue watching. As a way the credits draws the audience in. When watching a movie you like to know who is in it, you'll most likely watch the movie if you have your favorite actor or someone you enjoying watching if they are in the movie. Opening credits also give a feel for the movie, for example a form of cinematography thats used is sound. The sound is important, you can know if a movie is mystery or romance just by the sound in the credits.

What is the difference between opening credits and title sequence?

-Opening credits is a list of people or actors shown one after the other in the starting of a movie. While a title sequence is a special scene that takes place and then the title of the movie shows before the actual movie starts.

What techniques can be employed in an opening sequence?
